Donald I. Bates was born in Texas in 1953. He studied architecture at the University of Houston, graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture (with honors) in 1978, and gaining a Master of Architecture degree in 1983 from Vranbrook Academy of Art. Peter Davidson was born in Newcastle, Australia, and grew up on the north coast of NSW. He studied architecture at the New South Wales Institute of Technology, Sydney and graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1980. They founded Lab architecture studio in 1994 in London, UK. The Melbourne studio was opened in 1997 as a consequence of winning the federation square architectural design competition, and since that time the two directors have been based in Australia.
