| ...A wide road, planned with only the interests of traffic flow in mind, onto which a small mixed-use building faces - this is the landscape that constitutes the scenery of Japanese cities, to the extent that this mixed-use building could be located anywhere...It is in this duality between the extent to which the image connoted by the words to dwell has been rendered so remote, and yet in spite of this, there is the continued existence of places for dwelling that really represents this urban landscape...So in the case of this building, the lower level could be a shop or a leased office or a leased apartment, all of which are one part of a thing built up according to an urban logic, while riding above all this stuff is the place for dwelling... (Riken Yamamoto, Shinkenchiku Jutaku-Tokushu, Sept. 1986) |
